Derby - West Ham

 • West Ham welcomed Chelsea to the London Stadium in a crucial London Derby and managed to surprise the league leaders. David Moyes’ side won the game 3-2, despite going behind twice. In the first half, Chelsea was dominant with the ball, creating chance after chance and took the lead with a corner that was converted by Thiago Silva in the 29′. Chelsea was in cruise mode until Jorginho decided to mess up things with a sloppy back pass, which put Edouard Mendy under pressure, after which he gave away a penalty which was converted by Manuel Lanzini. An absolute worldie from Mason Mount gave the visitors the lead again just on the stroke of halftime.
The Blues introduced Romelu Lukaku at the start of the second half in place of an injured Kai Havertz. West Ham started as the better team and was rewarded for its efforts as Jarred Bowen equalized in the 56′ as the defense fell asleep. In the final minutes of the game, Arthur Masuaku’s cross-turned shot caught Mendy by surprise and it turned out to be the winning goal as the Irons stole all three points from under Chelsea’s nose.

Related Story: West Ham read Chelsea like a book in their 3-2 victory

Here is how each Chelsea player fared against a high-spirited West Ham side, which surely surprised everyone with its performance:
Edouard Mendy (Goalkeeper): 4/10
Edouard Mendy had an abysmal game against West Ham as he conceded three goals. For the first goal, Mendy conceded the penalty when he had the chance to put the ball out for a corner but decided to tussle with Bowen. For the second goal, one couldn’t blame Mendy as the ball went through Andreas Christensen’s legs ,but the third one was something which I believe he could have done better, seeing as that Mendy got a hand to the ball.
Andreas Christensen (Right centerback): 6/10
There was very little attacking threat from Michail Antonio in the first half due to the Danish defender marking him. In the second half, as West Ham started to assert its dominance, Christensen was tested. It was a bit unfortunate that the ball went through his legs for the second goal, but maybe he could have done better in that situation.
Thiago Silva (Centerback): 7.5/10
Just at the start of the game, Thiago Silva got away with a sloppy pass which went straight to Bowen. Nevertheless, the veteran defender headed home from a corner to give the Blues the lead. Immediately after that, he made a goal-line clearance to keep the lead intact. Throughout the game, Silva kept Antonio in check but Bowen got the better of him.
Antonio Rudiger (Left centerback): 6/10
The German centerback was coped well with Antonio whenever needed, but Bowen was a menace to him from start to finish. It is fair to say that Bowen had Rudiger’s number. Rudiger overall had an OK-ish game, creating two key passes and making his trademark runs forward but to no avail.

Next: 2. In the first half with very little defending to do, James was highly involved in the attacking half, creating two key passes throughout the game. But after the restart, James had to be more solid defensively as he saw very little of the ball in the second half. It was an average performance.
Jorginho (Central midfield): 5/10
Jorginho came back in the starting line-up after his midweek rest and for the second game in a row, the Italian midfielder proved to be the downfall of Chelsea. As the Blues were on cruise control after taking the lead in the first half, a loose and sloppy back pass put Mendy under pressure. The mistake allowed for the equalizer from nowhere. In the second half, Jorginho was not involved much in the attacking play. Not to forget how stupidly he got himself booked in the first half for dissent as he tried to award himself a free kick by falling over the ball and handling it.
Ruben Loftus-Cheek (Central midfield): 8/10
One of the best players on the pitch on Saturday was Ruben Loftus-Cheek. After his disappointing performance against Watford in the midweek, Loftus-Cheek bounced back well and had an amazing match. He used his strength very well against the likes of Soucek and Lanzini and stamped his authority in the second half when West Ham was on top.
Marcos Alonso (Left wingback): 5.5/10
Marcos Alonso is turning out to be a very weak point for the club after the injury to Ben Chilwell. In the first half, his delivery in the final third was woeful but the link-up play from the Spaniard was done very well, which kept Chelsea’s moves ticking over. Defensively, Alonso was very vulnerable and West Ham’s second equalizer was built from Alonso’s side in which he was very weak in the tackle to Coufal.

Next: 3. From the start, the English international looked lively and tried to break the resolute five-man West Ham defense. His corner delivery was also on point and helped give Chelsea the lead through Thiago Silva. Then, just before the second half, Mount lashed a volley past Fabianski to restore Chelsea’s lead. He helped the team out defensively too whenever needed.
Kai Havertz (Center forward): 6.5/10
The German international was heavily involved in the first half, building up attacks and he even had a couple of shots on goal. Seeing as Kai Havertz was competing with physically strong defenders like Zouma and Diop, he put up a pretty good display. Unfortunately, toward the end of the half, Havertz went down with an injury he sustained from Zouma’s challenge.
Hakim Ziyech (Left winger): 7.5/10
The Moroccan international gave a very good display against a high pressing West Ham team. At the start, Hakim Ziyech was a bit sloppy but as the game went on, Ziyech grew sharp and assisted Chelsea’s second goal with an exquisite cross-field pass which was converted by Mount. He was later replaced by Callum Hudson-Odoi.
Romelu Lukaku (Striker): 5.5/10
Romelu Lukaku came on at the start of the second half for Havertz. Throughout the match, the Belgian international couldn’t do much in any way possible. Still, a lot of minutes are needed for him to be at his best.
Callum Hudson-Odoi (Left winger/wingback): 6/10
Hudson-Odoi came on for Ziyech in the 64′. He was heavily involved in the second half as Chelsea looked for a winner. Again, his delivery in the final third was lacking quality. Toward the end of the game, Hudson-Odoi had to play as a left wingback and Antonio got the better of him a few times.
Christian Pulisic (Left winger): 5.5/10
Christian Pulisic came on for Alonso in the 72′ to give the Blues a bit more of an attacking threat. Sadly, he couldn’t do much to influence the game.

Next: Three lessons learnt in Chelsea’s defeat at West Ham

What rating would you give to each player?
